Fat freezing

Fat freezing

Fat freezing is a slimming technique that uses controlled cooling to reduce fat bulges such as love handles and tummy fat.

The term cryolipolysis can be divided into “cryo” which is cold or freezing, “lipo” which means fat and “lysis” which means to break apart. Therefore when combined, cryolipolysis means the destruction of fat cells by freezing or cooling. The fat cells that are exposed to the cold will disintegrate in a process of natural cell death also known as apoptosis. The lipids that are released in this process are progressively eliminated by natural metabolic activities over the three months following the procedure. Regular exercise during this period helps to optimise their elimination. Fat freezing affects only fat cells, since they are more sensitive to cold than other cells. Hence fat is removed while sparing neighbouring skin, muscles and nerves. This non-invasive technique offers an alternative to liposuction for those who wish to avoid the risks and recuperation time inherent to surgical procedures. Best results are obtained on patients that have a healthy weight and diet, but wish to get rid of resistant fat bulges.

The cooling hand piece is placed on the treated area. It contains a suction mechanism that will draw and hold the fatty bulge between two cooling panels and these will extract the heat out of the tissue. During the procedure, the Cryosculpt device maintains the treatment temperature at -5°C. A cryolipolysis session lasts one hour per zone.

Areas that can be treated include

Fat freezing allows a permanent localised elimination of fat cells. Results become visible three months after the session, with a reduction in the thickness of the fat bulge of approximately 30-40%. Patients can lose more centimetres of fat with additional treatments. The Cryosculpt device ensures homogeneous and natural results.

Who is a candidate?

The ideal individual for this procedure is within 20-30 pounds of their ideal body weight, and are maintaining or in the process of losing weight. This is because CryoSculpting does not suck the fat out or cause weight loss.

It simply destroys fat cells and your body needs to metabolise the fat or it will just get stored somewhere else.

Where does the fat go?

After the procedure, you will be the same size, as it takes a few weeks to shrink. Your fat is actually held inside cells, which are more or less little tiny packages that enlarge and shrink as you gain and lose weight.

During the CryoSculpt procedure, about 20-40% of these fat cells are killed and they release the fat which is slowly absorbed over several weeks. The fat that is released from the fat cells is no different than any fat that you eat.

This fat can be burned off as calories to keep you warm, propel you while walking, make your lungs work to breathe, etc.

That is what will happen if you are at a stable or losing weight.  If you are gaining weight  the fat will just mix in with the fat you are eating and get deposited somewhere else.

It is important to know that this is not a weight loss procedure. CryoSculpting refers to “sculpting” or shrinking down stubborn areas.

If you are not able to get the weight off, this is not going to help.

Your weight will not change as a result of the CryoSculpt procedure, you have to eat right and exercise to accomplish that.

How safe is it/What are the risks?

The procedure has been performed hundreds of thousands of times, with an extremely high level of safety compared to other fat reduction methods.
